Henry VIII Sovereign Penny
Glorious Tudor Silver for you ...
Henry VIII (1509-1547) had a dramatic reign, and the several changes to the nation's coinage illustrate the changing fortunes of both the country and the King.
The "Sovereign" penny, so-called because the obverse portrait shows the King seated on his throne (as on the original sovereign coin), was struck between 1526 and 1544 in silver and from onwards in a far poorer mix of copper and silver.
Our silver Sovereign pennies are dated between 1526-1544.
